Lancashire CRN is committed to providing quality support services for the Lancashire community sector involved in waste reuse, reduce and recycling activities. Resource not Rubbish

As the drive to recycle becomes even stronger and Lancashire becomes even more environmentally aware, we'll need to change the way we think about our rubbish and to look at waste as a resource.

Recycling waste is, of course, great for the environment and works by making waste into something else that can be used for a different purpose. However, this takes energy and money. It's even better if that waste can be reused (in its original form) such as collecting furniture and redistributing it to housing projects. The very best and most environmentally friendly solution is to reduce waste right at the beginning, such as buying food with less packaging or using real nappies.

Community Waste Sector in Lancashire

When most people think about recycling, they think about their kerbside collections or household waste recycling centres... however there is a lot more happening regarding waste in Lancashire than that.

Community groups across Lancashire are involved in a variety of waste activities ranging from organising paper collections at local schools or scout headquarters, to community scrap stores, composting, and furniture re-use and even bicycle refurbishment. Schemes often include education and awareness raising activities.

Many community groups use recycling to raise funds for other activities or to provide training and employment skills for marginalised members of our community. Some organisations also help to alleviate poverty and reduce social exclusion.

Examples of this include furniture reuse organisations which provide refurbished household items at low cost, or composting operations which enable access to organic foods at affordable prices.

Community groups can not only benefit the environment by reducing, reusing or recycling waste but also their local economy as well.
