Unsung hero recognized for inspirational commitment

Unsung hero recognized for inspirational commitment

5th Sep 2013

The Red Rose Resource Awards is a platform for community groups who prevent unwanted items from being landfilled by reusing or recycling, and in doing so, provide support for communities across our region. The awards recognize outstanding new projects, enterprises and partnerships – and also unsung heroes.

This year, the award was won by Janet Nuttall, warehouse manager at furniture reuse charity Gift 92 for 15 years.

Gift 92 is a Preston-based furniture reuse charity, who celebrated its 20-year anniversary last summer during the Guild celebrations. The small but dedicated team makes a big impact, and Janet has been at the forefront of this work for 15 years.

During 2012, 1,548 collections of furniture were made from the public, resulting in almost 89 tonnes of reusable furniture and household items being saved from landfill. Instead, these essential items were supplied to 819 vulnerable and disadvantaged people through 494 referrals.

"An extraordinary and inspirational lady"

Gift 92 Chairman Peter Metcalf nominated Janet, commenting “I cannot speak too highly of her commitment to the charity and to aiding needy people; her role is very demanding requiring much patience and tolerance. She is an extraordinary and inspirational lady, and has never had public recognition for her efforts, but instrumental in making a huge difference to the lives of others.

Janet was awarded a £250 cash prize sponsored by Advantage Waste Brokers which she has donated to Gift 92.

Business Development Manager Dave Allen said “Advantage Waste Brokers is part of the Recycling Lives family of companies and we wanted to sponsor the award both to give something back to the community and show our continued support and commitment to Lancashire’s social enterprises and the waste and recycling sector across the county.”

“The scoring panel was struck by what an impact Janet will have had over 15 years at GIFT 92, and how she will have directly supported thousands of local people in real need. So, congratulations to Janet, this award is very well deserved and we are delighted to invest in GIFT 92 at your request to continue the great work of this charity.”

The Red Rose Resource Awards 2013

The Red Rose Resource Awards are the Lancashire Community Recycling Network’s annual awards event, celebrating the impact of local charities and social enterprises that ensure items needed in their communities are redistributed instead of being lost to landfill. The event is held as part of the Lancashire Waste PFI Project, as part of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council’s commitment to not-for-profit organisations across our region.

Lancashire CRN receives ongoing support from Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council as part of the Lancashire Waste PFI Project.

County Councillor Janice Hanson, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for public protection and waste, said: "The waste recovery parks which have been built as a result of the partnership between Lancashire County Council, Blackpool Council and Global Renewables employ state-of-the-art technology to help achieve our goal of sending as little waste to landfill as possible by recycling and recovering it instead.

"Even the latest technology does not allow us to recycle everything, and many items can be reused to benefit people without being thrown away to start with, which is why we've also invested in community waste management.

"Since establishing the Lancashire Community Recycling Network over 10 years ago, we are proud to host a concentration of some of the most diverse and innovative groups in the country.

"The award winners this year are testament to that quality and the diverse ways that waste can be used as a resource to support local communities."

The ceremony was held at the Environmental Education Centre at Farington Waste Recovery Park in Leyland, following a breakfast networking event. A welcome was provided by Lancashire CRN Chair, and Selnet CEO Liz Tapner.

Selnet praises Lancashire CRN members for helping people "escape the cycle of deprivation"

Summing up the event, Liz commented “these organisations provide essential support to people with nowhere else to turn. They provide food, support, school uniforms, public services, essential furniture household items and other vital support to help clients escape the cycle of deprivation they have found themselves in.

“These are local people reaching out in their communities to make tangible differences. There is such a wealth of community waste management groups in Lancashire, this is something we should celebrate and raise awareness of.”

Winners of the four awards were presented with a recycled glass trophy, and generous cash prize to invest in their organisations and teams. The event was organised and delivered by Global Renewables on behalf of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council.
