Community Solutions are Lancashire’s Best Community Enterprise!

16th Sep 2013

Community Solutions North West Ltd was founded in 2011 to help people through difficult times of genuine need – and they have just received an award for the enormous impact they have achieved.

Burnley was recently awarded UK's most enterprising Area award for its "pioneering" culture – something that social enterprise Community Solutions is brimming over with.

The group started off with their Food Bank, supporting 6548 people with over 168,300 meals. They meet the immediate crisis faced by local individuals and families but also target the cycle of deprivation by offering support, training, volunteering opportunities and help to maximise or increase their economic stability and employability.

In providing the Food Bank service, other needs presented themselves. In response Community Solutions set up a befriending service to combat social isolation and loneliness, a volunteer management service, a street soccer academy supporting vulnerable and at-risk adult males, and most recently, the East Lancashire Community RePaint Scheme – providing low cost paint for those in need and the community.

Co-Founder Mark Hirst said “We are very grateful – and very surprised to win this award! It is fantastic to be part of a Network of like-minded organisations all looking to provide solutions to the problems faced by our communities. It’s about people caring for people and helping each other get ahead.”

It's all in the name...

Paul Hemmings, CEO at Global Renewables Lancashire who sponsored the award said “It’s all in the name – this organisation is all about providing solutions for the community, helping people to help each other.

"From their Food Bank to their paint reuse project, they stop surpluses being wasted and meet community need. There is so much energy in this group and their positivity is infectious - we applaud the impact they have made and are pleased to invest in their work.”

The Red Rose Resource Awards 2013

The Red Rose Resource Awards are the Lancashire Community Recycling Network’s annual awards event, celebrating the impact of local charities and social enterprises that ensure items needed in their communities are redistributed instead of being lost to landfill. The event is held as part of the Lancashire Waste PFI Project, as part of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council’s commitment to not-for-profit organisations across our region.

Lancashire CRN receives ongoing support from Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council as part of the Lancashire Waste PFI Project.

County Councillor Janice Hanson, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for public protection and waste, said: "The waste recovery parks which have been built as a result of the partnership between Lancashire County Council, Blackpool Council and Global Renewables employ state-of-the-art technology to help achieve our goal of sending as little waste to landfill as possible by recycling and recovering it instead.

"Even the latest technology does not allow us to recycle everything, and many items can be reused to benefit people without being thrown away to start with, which is why we've also invested in community waste management.

"Since the Lancashire Community Recycling Network was established over 10 years ago, we are proud to host a concentration of some of the most diverse and innovative groups in the country.

"The award winners this year are testament to that quality and the diverse ways that waste can be used as a resource to support local communities."

The ceremony was held at the Environmental Education Centre at Farington Waste Recovery Park in Leyland, following a breakfast networking event. A welcome was provided by Lancashire CRN Chair, and Selnet CEO Liz Tapner.

Selnet praises Lancashire CRN members for helping people "escape the cycle of deprivation"

Summing up the event, Liz commented “these organisations provide essential support to people with nowhere else to turn. They provide food, support, school uniforms, public services, essential furniture household items and other vital support to help clients escape the cycle of deprivation they have found themselves in.

“These are local people reaching out in their communities to make tangible differences. There is such a wealth of community waste management groups in Lancashire, this is something we should celebrate and raise awareness of.”

Winners of the four awards were presented with a recycled glass trophy, and generous cash prize to invest in their organisations and teams. The event was organised and delivered by Global Renewables on behalf of Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council.
